Christmas gingerbread or Lebkuchen contains up to seven times the amount of the carcinogen acrylamide as found in foods such as potato chips and French fries, the original scare snacks, according to chemist Gerhard Jungkunz of Bavaria’s health department.

Germany’s Minister of Health Renate Künast will ask food producers to lower acrylamide levels and advise citizens to watch their snacking, but sees no need for strict legislation.

Nutrtional chemist Udo Pollmer warned against hysteria, saying that acrylamide was nothing modern, but rather something people have been eating since the pre-historic day they first roasted meat, the web site merkur.online reports.
