General Mills has said that it will work towards the goal of switching its US egg supply to cage-free eggs.
In an update on its animal welfare policy, the company said: "We commit to working toward 100% cage free eggs for our US operations. We recognise that the current avian influenza outbreak has been deeply disruptive to the US egg supply and producers. As the industry works to rebuild its supply chain, we will work with suppliers to determine a path and reasonable timeline toward this commitment."
Steve Peterson, director of sustainable sourcing at General Mills, conceded that this commitment will "be a challenge" due to the egg shortage impacting US food makers.
"We really see this as a long-term goal that will require unparalleled collaboration. We’ll work closely with our suppliers as they rebuild the supply chain to determine a path forward on this commitment," he commented.
General Mills has not given a deadline for the changes to come into effect. The company said that it already sources cage-free eggs for all of its Häagen-Dazs manufactured in Europe.
