French firm Yooji has launched the first baby food line certified by the Marine Stewardship Council.
The company, which had been selling frozen vegetable purees, has expanded its portfolio and rolled out frozen cod portions made with fish caught sustainably, the MSC said.
“We congratulate their team for their commitment and innovative spirit. We hope that this example will inspire other sector players so that consumers can contribute to preserving our oceans from a very young age,” Edouard Le Bart, head of the MSC in France, said.
Yooji, founded in 2012, has focused on developing “environmentally-friendly” baby food. Founder Frédéric Ventre said when the company was considering moving into seafood it was “natural” to look to MSC certification.
The MSC, he said, “objectively and independently guarantees that the cod we offer has been fished in line with sustainable methods”.
