Three Brittany pork processing co-operatives have merged their operations in response to an “unprecedented crisis” in the sector.

The enlarged group will be called Aveltis and has been formed in collaboration with the pork branch of another co-operative, Terrena.

Alvetis will be France’s second-biggest player in pork processing, behind Cooperl Arc Atlantic, with a turnover of almost EUR400m (US$546.6m).

The head of Pigalys, Fortuné Le Calvé, has been named president of Alvetis.

The merger is already operational and will be fully completed in September.
