Southern French sausage maker Les Braserades will double sausage and charcuterie production following the purchase of northern rival Umark.

The acquisition of Umark, based in the Oise department north of Paris and which sells to the wholesale trade, will see Les Braserades’ output rise to 6,000 tonnes a year.

The purchase gives Les Braserades, which sells over half of its output to Carrefour, a foothold in the Paris region. Les Braserades is based near Montpellier and manufactures cold meats and sausages.

Les Braserades’ production will double, as will turnover to EUR28m (US$41.3m), with staff rising from 80 to 160.

Les Braserades MD Guy Dupuis said the company had intended to build a factory but started negotiations with Umark when the project stalled.

“This will also be a chance for Umark to set a toe into distribution and to sell in the south of France,” Dupuis said.
