The French government has published a decree guaranteeing more prominence on product labels to the origin of fruit and vegetables.
The law has been introduced “in order to meet the information requirements of customers within a difficult (economic) context for growers”, the French government said in a statement.
“From now on, whenever prices are displayed at points of sale, the origin of the goods must appear in visible and legible fashion, in characters of the same size as those indicating the price,” explained French minister for business and consumer Affairs Hervé Novelli.
“This will allow consumers to more clearly identify the origin of the fruits and vegetables displayed on the stalls and help them make a better choice in terms of value for money and responsible purchasing, having been indirectly informed of the distance travelled by the product (to the point of sale) and its gustatory qualities.”
