Experts have gathered to discuss fighting the growing problem of illegal and unreported fishing, which is threatening the health of already threatened fish stocks.
Staged in Paris, by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), an international workshop heard estimates that illegal, unregulated and unreported (IUU) fishing accounts for up to 30% of total catches worldwide. With an estimated 75% of wild stocks already fully exploited, over-exploited or depleted, this is a serious problem, delegates said.
They noted particularly gloomy prospects for commercially valuable species such as tuna, orange roughy and Patagonian toothfish.
Experts discussed possible private schemes to fight illegal tuna fishing, focusing especially on long-line fishing, for instance.
