Saint-Etienne-based retail chain Casino yesterday (25 July) reported strong second quarter sales gains, with sales rising a total of 15.8%.


France, the retailer’s home market, accounting for 70% of sales, saw an increase of 3.7%, while internationally sales grew by 60.5%.


Net sales totalled EUR$6.12bn (US$7.72bn).


The group reported total organic growth of 4.3%, 3% in France and 8.9% internationally.


In France, the company said that it saw a significantly improved performance in its traditional Géant hypermarket and Casino supermarket formats, with same store sales increasing by 2.8% and 4% respectively. Each format increased its market share by 0.1%.

However, the retailer saw its discount formats struggling with sluggish same store sales at Monoprix and Superette, although overall sales in these formats increased by 3.7% and 4.7% respectively.


Casino reported an “excellent” performance in Latin America and Asia, the group’s priority international growth areas. In Latin America, the company reported organic growth of 23% and same store sales growth of 7.2%, while in Asia same store sales increased by 3.6% and the company reported sustained organic growth of 10.2%.
