Following fears that BSE may be spreading within France, the food safety agency has proposed a complete ban on the use of cow intestines in any kind of food production. They are usually used as sausage skins.

Subject to approval from the Health and Agriculture Ministries, the ban has been recommended because the agency believes that the methods used to clean intestines do not guarantee protection against BSE contamination.

BSE is linked to the deadly human disease vCJD, and more than fifty cases of infected cattle have been confirmed since January.
