Finnish food group Atria said a three-day strike by the food industry in Finland is having a “significant” financial impact on its business.

The strike, which began yesterday (19 April), is the second led by The Finnish Food Workers Union following the collapse of talks over pay increases earlier this month.

The initial strike involved 4,500 workers and resulted in the closure of 12 bakeries and meat processing plants.

Atria managing director Juha Gröhn told just-food that its factories are now “quiet”.

“We can’t deliver goods to our retailers and the foodservice sector. Hopefully we will find a solution but it is a really difficult case. We have had strikes here since 1994 so it is not uncommon. Of course, it has had a significant impact financially on our business,” Gröhn said.

Dairy group Valio said that, while the strike hadn’t affected production in the company “too much”, it is experiencing a shortage of some products.

“We have some lack of product and we are keeping all factories and plants working using ‘superior’ staff,” a spokesperson told just-food.

“No plants are closed and we are trying to continue delivery on milks, creams and sour creams etc. The strikes have affected some smaller products but not all. It is difficult to estimate the cost of the strikes to the business,” the spokesperson added.
