Farmers in northern France are claiming victory over supermarket retailer Lidl in their stand over French origin meat and mik.
Earlier this week, farmers representing the Syndicat des Jeunes Agriculteurs (JA) lifted their blockade of Lidl's distribution hub in Cambrai. It claimed the discounter had agreed to stock more French-origin beef, pork and poultry and from now on to be 100%-dependent on domestic producers for milk.
Speaking to just-food today, a spokesman for Lidl confirmed comments by country manager, Michel Biero, in the French press that Lidl had made a commitment several months ago to develop 'made in France' products and the process would now be accelerated.
However, he denied Lidl had bowed to pressure from farmers.
"From tomorrow, all our 1,500 stores across France will be 100% supplied with French milk while we have also agreed to withdraw German-origin beef. This means we are now 100% French on beef."
"For pork and poultry, it's more complicated. Already, our poultry products are more than 50% French origin. When it is possible to source more French pork and poultry we will."
