Reforms to a European Union directive restricting the use of certain food additives, other than colourings and sweeteners, have been tightened by the European Parliament, which wants the legislation to also apply to food flavourings.

MEPs are concerned that the current directive could contain a legal loophole allowing banned additives to be incorporated in flavourings and hence gain “back-door entry” into food sold in the EU.

In its first reading of the reforms, the parliament also reduced further a number of limits on the use of various additives that had been proposed by the Commission.

MEPs say they expect their amendments to be approved by the EU Council of Ministers.
