European politicians have given the green light to the European Commission’s reform of subsidies on fruit and vegetables.

The European Parliament has approved the latest reform from the Commission, which also covers processed fruit and vegetables.

MEPs, however, called for more flexibility to be given to EU member states over the subsidies they hand down on the production of processed fruits and vegetables, such as tomatoes and citrus fruits.

For its part, the Commission wants to scale back the amount of subsidies linked to production, replacing them with direct payments, to avoid the EU market being flooded with excess fruit and vegetable products and ingredients.
