McCain Foods will have to offload the Lutosa retail brand in Europe after the EU looked into the impact of the Canadian giant’s acquisition of the business from rival PinguinLutosa.

In October, french fry giant McCain struck a deal to buy Lutosa, another supplier of french fries, from Belgium’s PinguinLutosa.

The European Commission said today (29 May) there was an “overlap” between the two businesses, particularly in frozen french fries.

Brussels said competition would be “significantly” reduced in Belgium without the disposal. It said McCain had offered to sell the Lutosa retail assets in the European Economic Area.
