Strong opposition has been lodged to the idea of an EU-wide food quality label based on EU production standards.

The Confederation of the Food and Drink Industries of the EU (CIAA) has said it opposes the introduction of new labelling requirements indicating compliance with EU standards.
Responding to a European Commission debate, the CIAA said existing EU laws mandating food/feed safety, environment and animal welfare standards were sufficient.
“Foodstuffs are subject to a large number of labelling obligations, which already lead to space constraints… too much information could distract…consumers from essential information on safety,” CIAA said.
Meanwhile, EU farmers organisation COPA-COGECA opposed the idea of allowing non-EU food producers and manufacturers to use such a logo, if they demonstrated compliance with EU food production laws. This could confuse consumers about the origin of such foods, it warned.
