Mariann Fischer Boel is to step down from her role as EU Agriculture Commissioner at the end of her term.

The Danish commissioner made her announcement yesterday (14 September) at an informal farm council meeting, being held in Vaxjo, Sweden.

A spokesperson for the European Commission told just-food that Fischer-Boel will see her term out, though the exact date of her retirement has not been confirmed.

Speculation has already begun as to who her successor will be. Names have included Romanian Dacian Ciolofl, a former agriculture minister, with France having already indicated that it would support the nomination.

It is understood that Fischer-Boel cited personal reasons for her decision to vacate the commission post.
