The World Trade Organisation has indicated that it will not tolerate the EU’s discriminatory trade regime favouring imports of African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) bananas over those from Latin America.

In its 2005 “duty-free tariff quota for bananas originating in ACP countries, the European Union has failed to implement the…rulings” of the WTO, ruled a special compliance panel requested by the US.

The EU will now be expected to confirm more liberal access for Latin American ‘dollar bananas’.

The US government could now request retaliatory duties on EU food exports, if it is unhappy with Brussels’ response.
