Europe’s Health Commissioner is mulling proposals to allow “limited” amounts of genetically modified material to be mixed in imports of various food crops.

Following exhaustive debate in the EU executive, Androulla Vassiliou has suggested this as a means to break the deadlock in the EU on GM policy.
Vassiliou has suggested that a ceiling be set for the amount of GM material that would be allowed in imports of products such as maize, rice and soya. This ceiling would be less than 1%.
The EU currently allows 0.9% of GM material in food and feed imports.
“The proposal is in its very early stages. Our position is that the low level amounts of permissible GMOs being discussed are more workable than the current zero tolerance policy,” an EU health spokesperson told just-food today (10 June).
