The European Commission has asked the European Union Council of Ministers to take action against five national bans on genetically modified products, that Brussels considers illegal under EU law.

In an unusual move that would expedite any European Court of Justice (ECJ) action against the measures, the Commission has asked ministers to tell erring governments to remove the bans within 20 days of an order being made. The products concerned are Austria’s ban on genetically modified maize (Zea mays L. line MON 810) and GM maize (Zea mays L. line Bt 176), Germany and Luxembourgs’ ban on Zea mays L. line Bt 176; and Greece’s blockon sales of GM spring swede rape (Brassica napus L. ssp. oleifera). All have already been approved for use across the EU.
