The manufacture of meat and dairy products from cloned animals is likely to become legal in Europe under a revised EU novel food regulation.
A vote at yesterday’s (22 June) EU Council of Ministers (agriculture) approved changes to this law, which requires conformation by the European Parliament to enter into force.
Ministers “explicitly” included cloned animal food within the regulation’s controls, said a communiqué. They also asked the European Commission to review the issue for one year before deciding whether a special cloned animal food law is needed.
The council added that food containing nanomaterials should be regulated by the EU’s novel food regime.
