The EU has rejected Danone’s claim that immunofortis, an ingredient added to its baby formula products, strengthens babies’ immune systems.
In an opinion published by the European Food Safety Authority yesterday (10 February), a scientific panel concluded that the company had failed to produce sufficient evidence to justify this claim.

The EFSA panel found studies submitted as evidence by Danone had “considerable limitations”, inconsistent results or were conducted on animals and could not be extrapolated to humans.
“The evidence presented in support of a biologically plausible mechanism by which Immunofortis could exert the claimed effect is not convincing,” the EFSA panel concluded.
Danone was not immediately available for comment.
