Special marketing protection has been announced by the European Commission for three more traditional products – Italian Ciauscolo salami, Spanish bread Pan de Cruz de Ciudad Real and Portuguese sweet potato Batata doce de Aljezur.
Brussels has passed a regulation saying these products cannot be sold in the EU under these names unless they are made using traditional methods in their historic home regions.
For instance, the salami must be made from traditional Italian ‘large white’ and ‘Landrace’ pigs. It must have a “delicate, aromatic, distinctive and spicy smell (salt, ground black pepper, wine and crushed garlic are added) with a delicate and savoury taste.”
