A Valga-based meat processor stands accused of selling Lithuanian sausage under an Estonian label.

Valga Lihatoostus recently left the Estonian Meat Union, which now says it is deeply disappointed in the company’s business practices. It is alleged that the company is selling smoked sausage products manufactured in Lithuania under a misleading label that implies the product is produced in Estonia.

The label reads: “Estonian product. Valga Lihatoostus” although in smaller print elsewhere on the label, mention is made that the manufacturer is UAB Biovela of Lithuania.

Valga Lihatoostus spokesman Toomas Tiirik defended the labelling, explaining that the company was not intentionally misleading shoppers. He claimed that the company did not have any other labels.

The news has caused controversy because Valga Lihatoostus recently accused large meatpackers of using poor quality raw material, thereby cheating consumers. Along with six other meat processors, left the Meat Union as they claimed it had failed to improve the reputation of their industry, which is one of its principal goals.
