Discount retailer Lidl has confirmed plans to open a distribution centre in Denmark.

The Køge-based warehouse on the east coast of Denmark, will be opened to service the retailer’s existing and future stores on the islands of Sjælland and Falster, the company said.

The 85,000sq m warehouse is expected to open in 2014, creating around 200 jobs.

Lidl Denmark managing director Finn Tang said the opening of a warehouse in the Køge region had been in the pipeline for some time due to the group’s “continued growth and success on the Danish market”.

“The Scandinavian Transport Centre [location] in Køge is not random. The location is logistically optimal in order to serve our existing and future stores,” he said, adding that the additional capacity will allow it to “maintain growth and our expansion plan to open more stores in Sjælland, and especially in the metropolitan area”.

Lidl did not reveal financial details of the investment. The retailer said its headquarters will remain in Kolding in the south of the country where Lidl operates its only warehouse. The retailer operates 88 stores in Denmark.
