Danish food ingredients giant Danisco has announced that it has commissioned new production facilities worth around DKr90m (US$10.6mm) at the Grindsted site, dedicated to the production of Natamax ™, a biological protectant used by the global food industry.

For five years Danisco has been holding the rights to Natamax™, which was originally developed by Pfizer. Until now, Danisco had Natamax™ produced at a Pfizer plant in the US, but Danisco has now started up production itself. Natamax™ is produced on the basis of fermentation.

Natamax™ uses are varied within the food industry. In the dairy industry, it is used for surface treatment of cheese products to prevent formation of mould. It is also used in dried sausages and in fruit juice to control yeast and mould, which can spoil foods and in extreme cases develop hazardous toxins.

Danisco said that its Natamax™ product is doing well in the markets of the US, Mexico, South America and Europe, but also in the Middle East and Asia – countries with warm climates – demand is growing for this natural, safe and environmentally friendly product.
