Denmark is to investigate whether horizontal or vertical price cartels are operating within the country’s food production and retailing sectors.
The Danish government has set up a committee to investigate any possible price fixing. The move comes with food prices in Denmark having jumped 15% since March 2007.
The state-funded Department of Veterinary and Food Administration (VFA) will conduct the investigation.
“Although the average increase has been 15%, in some cases the price of certain basic foods has increased by up to 75%. This is dramatic,” said VFA director Hans Kirkegaard.
“Our inquiry will have a special focus on price increases for bread and flour products, and we will be visiting the country’s biggest flour producers and industrial bakeries. The food industry is denying any irregularities, but we must determine the situation for ourselves,” said Kirkegaard.
