Tesco is planning to open over 130 stores in central and Eastern Europe this year, the UK retail giant told just-food today (4 February).

The retailer has earmarked 137 new stores across the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Turkey, an official from the company’s Czech business said at the Retail Summit 2009 in Prague.

Jan Koutny, site research country manager for Tesco in the Czech Republic, told just-food that the company would open 20 stores in the country this year.

At present, Tesco runs 800 outlets with a total floor space of two million square metres in five countries across central and Eastern Europe. The stores are visited by some 13m people a week.
