A frozen vegetable factory near Mochov, a village 12 miles east of Prague, has stepped in to help save a wide range of historic documents from the damage caused by the worst flooding to hit Prague in 175 years.

Until last week, they were housed in various museums, libraries and other cultural institutions throughout Prague, but now the treasures, which include music scores written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and one of the 12 surviving editions of the 1488 Prague Bible, have been tightly wrapped in plastic and stacked in a refrigerated room in the factory.

Vladimir Blaha, manager of the Mochovske Mrazirny company, explained that storing the soggy materials in this way is an emergency time-delaying tactic until experts can restore the paper properly by vacuuming out the moisture.

He told the Associated Press that he had no idea how long his factory will be used: “This stuff could be frozen here for years.”
