Ongoing plans to restructure the Cuban sugar industry has meant that 90,000 of Cuba’s 420,000 sugar workers will be trained for new jobs, according to an announcement by Cuban President Fidel Castro.

The plans also involve the closure of 70 of the 154 sugar processing plants in Cuba, leaving an anticipated annual production of over 4 million tons of sugar cane.
The Cuban Sugar Ministry has said that the former sugar workers who return to school to train for new jobs will receive between 300 and 1000 Cuban pesos (US$14-US$48) per month during their training. The average government salary is less than 300 pesos.
