CSM Bakery Solutions will shut its factory in Houston in Texas – first slated for closure in October – next month.
The US-based, business-to-business bakery supplier had planned for the site would close on 1 October. However, the company said changes elsewhere in its manufacturing network had kept the plant open longer.
“When we made the initial announcement in May relating to changes we were making to optimize our manufacturing operations the October 1, 2016 date was the soonest we viewed the closure would happen so the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification reflected that date. As a result of some adjustments we made in our manufacturing operations and manufacturing footprint, we were able to keep the plant open longer but we have continued to plan for its closure. Based on our latest plans, it now looks like that date will be closer to March 31st,” a spokesperson for CSM told just-food. Some 147 staff work at the Houston site.
The CSM spokesperson refused to be drawn on how much of the production could move to other plants.
CSM had first outlined plans for the closure of the Houston site last February as part of a wider programme to “optimise” its operations. The company set out plans to invest in five US plants and two UK factories. Two other UK facilities have been lined up for closure by the end of this year.
