Clemens Food Group, a US-based pork producer, is set to close its Kunzler plant in Pennsylvania, leading to almost 200 staff being laid off.

The decision coincides with the cessation of production for all remaining contracted customers. Some 193 workers will be impacted.

Clemens Food Group acquired local peer Kunzler & Company in May, adding a plant in Lancaster and two in Tyrone township in Pennsylvania to its portfolio.

In conjunction with the plant closure, the company also issued a WARN Notice to the employees, detailing the final day of operations.

The plant, located at 652 Manor St, will remain shuttered until a new owner is identified.

“We understand this news is disappointing and distressing for those who will be affected by the closure of the Lancaster facility. We also recognise that all individuals affected have contributed to Kunzler’s success, and their dedication and hard work have been invaluable to the company’s history,” Clemens Food Group said in a statement.

Operations at the site are scheduled to end on 7 December. Talks with a potential buyer are ongoing, the company said.

After the closure, Kunzler branded products will continue to be produced by Clemens Food Group.

The company expressed its intention to work with the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) to ensure a smooth transition for its team members.

In response to the plant closure, the UCFW Local 152 accused the group of discrimination and unfair labour practices.

The union filed charges with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), alleging actions that undermine union membership.

Approximately 145 of the 193 affected employees are members of the United Food and Commercial Workers union.

Just Food has approached Clemens Food Group to comment on the union’s move.
