Chobani, the US-based Greek yogurt and oat-milk maker, has announced the construction of a manufacturing facility adjacent to an existing site in Victoria, Australia, as the business moves to consolidate production plants.
Work has just started on the site in Dandenong South, which will have greater production capacity and new warehouse space. The new plant is situated on Quality Drive, which backs onto Chobani’s current plant on Hammond Road. The project is estimated to be completed in May next year.
“The expanded facility will enable Chobani to consolidate its production and logistics operations and offices from four sites into one, reaffirming its commitment to the local area,” it said in a statement. “The redeveloped site will feature over 21,000 square meters of dedicated storage, production and office space, an increase of well over 100% to the current footprint.”
A spokesperson for Chobani in Australia told just-food the company supplies the retail and foodservice channels and also exports to Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and the Maldives. As well as its headquarters and manufacturing plant in Dandenong South, the company also operates a logistics facility in Lyndhurst and an office site in Mulgrave.
The spokesperson, who declined to provide revenues for the Australian part of Chobani’s business, added: “Chobani has an aggressive long-term plan in Australia to significantly increase the business, not only through growth in the yogurt category but also expansion beyond dairy. The plant will manufacture existing yogurt product ranges under the Chobani and Gippsland Dairy brands and will also support the company’s expansion into plant-based products.”
Chobani’s legacy in Australia dates back more than a decade, when the company was trading as Agro Farms and acquired Bead Foods, a local dairy business.
