Wal-Mart Stores has appointed Sean Clarke as the COO of the retailer’s Chinese division.

The world’s largest retailer confirmed today that Clarke was previously head of finance for Canada.

It also named Steve Smith as chief marketing officer for China. He was previously senior vice president of strategy, marketing and communications with Delhaize.

“We are confident that the mix of Wal-Mart global talents and strong local leaders will head the company for further success in this booming market,” said Ed Chan, chief executive of Wal-Mart China.

A number of executives have left the division in recent months with Roland Lawrence and Rob Cissell, former CFO and CFO of Wal-Mart China leaving in May, and Shawn Gray, vice president of Wal-Mart China’s hypermarket operations, leaving in June.

Wal-Mart has since appointed since appointed Mario-José Medina as CFO and Del Sloenker as COO of the hypermarkets division.
