China is stepping up the supervision of food safety in response to growing international concern, officials promised today (10 July).

A wave of safety scares including contamination of petfoods, seafood and substandard juice has focused the attention of international trade partners on China’s food standards.

“The Chinese government has taken these reports very seriously and inspected the products concerned batch by batch,” Lin Wei, in charge of the import and export of foodstuffs, told a press conference in Beijing. “We have introduced tough measures for unlicensed businesses or those breaking the law.”

Under pressure to demonstrate its commitment to improving safety, Beijing announced last week that it had closed down 180 food factories making fake and poor quality products.

Officials also stressed their confidence in food safety at home. Food made for the domestic market tends to go through fewer checks than that destined for exports, raising concerns about the quality of produce to be served up during next year’s Olympic Games.

But Wu Jianping, director of food production supervision at China’s General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ), said: “We have already implemented a plan for monitoring and supervising food safety from the farm to the table during the Olympic Games. I am confident that we can ensure food safety during this time.”
