Canadian retailer Sobeys has formed two business units aiming to position the company for “accelerated growth and performance”.

The two business units announced yesterday (13 October) are the IGA Operations business unit and the Multi-Format Operations business unit.

“We have made these changes as a confident, proactive accelerant of our strategy to optimize our performance in an increasingly competitive environment,” said Sobeys president and CEO Bill McEwan.

The IGA Operations business unit consists of Sobeys’ IGA, IGA extra, Les Marchés Tradition, Marché Bonichoix and Rachelle-Béry chains in Quebec. It will continue to be led by Marc Poulin.

The Multi-Format Operations division includes the Sobeys chain, Thrifty Foods, Sobeys Urban Fresh and Foodland. It also takes in the IGA stores in western Canada, FreshCo, Needs, Fast Fuel and Sobeys’ liquor operations. Jason Potter, formerly president of operations of Sobeys Atlantic division, will head up the unit.

In addition, Sobeys appointed CFO François Vimard as executive vice president. He will be responsible for finance, IT, distribution, real estate, legal and construction.

Senior vice president for finance and treasury Paul Jewer will become CFO, reporting to Vimard.
