Canadian retailer Metro Inc has broken ground on a produce and dairy products warehouse in Quebec.

The Laval-based facility, set to open in March 2013, will replace the firm’s warehouse located in Montreal’s east end, it said.

Built at a cost of C$50m (US$49.3m), the plant will be able to store a larger quantity of produce, namely certified organic and exotic produce, as well as a wider variety of Quebec produce, and dairy products, Metro said.

“This investment will enable us to improve the quality, variety and freshness of the products offered to consumers and to our merchants,” Metro president and CEO Eric La Flèche said yesterday (4 July) “It’s part of our Freshness project which is intended to increase customer satisfaction.”
