A tentative agreement has averted the strike of Loblaw workers in Saskatchewan but employees in Alberta are still planning to launch industrial action this morning (6 October).

The Canadian retailer’s Real Canadian Superstore, Warehouse Club, and Extra Foods workers in Saskatchewan had threatened to start striking on Saturday, but last minute negotiations with the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) ended in a deal that the union found acceptable.

The UFCW will be advising its members to ratify the settlement when the deal is put to the vote, the union said.

In Manitoba, a ratification vote is also pending on a separate Loblaw contract there after the UFCW reached a settlement covering the province’s Extra Foods locations last week.

However, to date, Loblaw and the union have failed to reach an agreement in Alberta where employees at the retailer’s Real Canadian Superstore are still preparing to strike. Last week, talks between the union and Loblaw in Alberta broke off.
