OTTAWA – The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning consumers not to consume Matjes Herring Fillets in Oil, packed by Yorkfish Co. located in North York, Ontario.  This product may contain Clostridium botulinum bacteria.


The Matjes Herring Fillets in Oil is sold in 4.5 kg pails to retail stores in Toronto and Windsor, Ontario only.  Consumers purchasing herring which is packaged at the retail store level are encouraged to check the source of the product with their retailer.


Botulism is a life-threatening illness and initial symptoms are generally nausea and vomiting followed by blurred/double vision, difficulty in speaking, swallowing, general fatigue, lack of muscle coordination and respiratory impairment.  Food contaminated with C. botulinum may not look or smell spoiled. Consumers should dispose of remaining product immediately. The products should not be consumed by humans or animals. There have been no illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.


Yorkfish Co. is voluntarily recalling this product.  The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of this recall.
