Brazilian beef exports are expected to rise by up to 30% in 2003 and could overtake the US as the world’s second biggest beef exporter, a leading producer’s adviser has said.
Beef exports from Brazil are expected to rise to 1.3 million tonnes in 2003, up from 1 million tonnes last year, but would still account for just 15% of total production.
“Beef exports have grown greatly over the past five years and Brazil has the potential to become the world’s No.1 exporter,” Paulo Mustefaga, meat adviser to the National Agricultural and Livestock Confederation of Brazil (CNA), was quoted by Reuters as saying.
He also said, however, that a number of sanitary and economic trade barriers would have to be overcome for Brazil to overtake Australia as the number one beef exporter.
