Five Belgian pig farms have been placed under quarantine in relation to an investigation into illegal growth hormone usage on a number of Dutch farms.

The quarantined farms had imported around 5,500 pigs from the Netherlands, where the animal fodder at 29 pig farms is believed to be contaminated with MPA, a growth hormone that blocks the fertilisation process.

According to Expatia.com, the Federal Agency for Food Safety says that public health is at no risk because concentrations of MPA are very low and pigs that might have been infected have not yet reached the food chain.
