Delhaize opened its second pilot Red Market store in the Belgian town of Andenne today (23 October).

The Belgian food retailer said the 1,500 sq m low-cost pilot store will feature a limited range of around 6,000 items including local produce and 100% self-scanning to minimise cost.

Consumers take a barcode-equipped card on entering the store for use with one of the 210 self-scanners, while Red Market also uses the so-called ‘Q-buster’ system at the checkout.

As with the first Red Market store in Gembloux, the Andenne store will be operated by Delhaize Groupe subsidiary Smart Food Shopping.

Four more Red Market pilots are slated to open next year.
