A school on Australia’s Gold Coast is to provide breakfast for students, in a bid to improve performance in exams.

Staff at the Upper Commera State College have expressed concerns that pupils do not perform to their full potential in important tests because they have not had a decent breakfast, reported the Gold Coast Bulletin.

In an extension to a breakfast program already established in many schools, the college will offer a breakfast of bacon and egg muffins, cereal, yoghurt, fruit, juice and milk before the start of the forthcoming Year 7 numeracy and literacy tests.

Almost a quarter of upper primary school children across the state are believed to skip breakfast, something that principal Lee Callum sees as a concern.

“It’s disappointing because it’s been proven how important it is for students to eat breakfast, and a healthy breakfast.

“We are hosting this breakfast as a way to both ensure the kids are well fed on this significant day, and to teach them good eating habits,” Callum said.
