Australian agribusiness GrainCorp is to close eight silos across northwest Victoria, in a move that comes only one week after the company announced a proposed merger with Queensland-based Grainco.

GrainCorp said the latest closures are part of a plan to improve its system, by closing older silos and upgrading its more modern ones.

GrainCorp’s Southern Division manager, Jack Tansley, said he cound not rule out further closures next year. “It’s not something we’ve got a plan on, it’s really something that we do each harvest – review what we need for the following harvest and where we see our capital expenditure being committed,” he was quoted by ABC News as saying.
