Opposition politicians in Australia say the Federal Government’s ineptitude is putting thousands of jobs in the meat sector at risk.

Labor’s primary industries spokesman Kerry O’Brien said the way Agriculture Minister Warren Truss was reacting to the US beef quota was threatening the livelihood of many small rural communities.

O’Brien’s comments come ahead of a Senate committee inquiry into Truss’s handling of the 378,000 tonne quota, due to start today [Monday]. Truss last month overrode stiff opposition, including that voiced by his advisory council, and set down requirements that will effectively protect the quotas of companies selling exclusively to the US.
