New regulations announced by New South Wales Health Minister Craig Knowles earlier this week compel restaurants to tell diners which dishes contain monosodium glutamate (MSG).

While packaged food already has to alert consumers to the presence of MSG, foodservice providers were hitherto exempt from this requirement. Restaurants which fail to make diners aware of MSG will in future face fines of up to A$5500 (US$2,927).

Knowles was quoted as saying: “It’s only courtesy to consumers and a fair thing that if people are using large amounts of added MSG they should let people know about it,” and that restaurants will have to declare the use of MSG on the menu, or other areas of the food display.
