Woolworths Ltd has announced plans to add daily intake guide information to the front of all of its private label foods.

Daily intake guide thumbnail labels already feature on more than 4,000 supermarket products across Australia, and Woolworths said it plans to increase their use to its full range of products within the next 12 months.

The move was applauded by the Australian Food and Grocery Council (AGFC), which has championed the use of DIG labelling over other front-of-pack nutritional labelling styles, such as the traffic light labels recommended by the Blewett Labelling Review or Sanitarium’s recently launched Healthy Eating System.

Daily intake guides calculate a product’s nutritional values as a percentage of the Recommended Daily Intake of each nutrient, based on an adult requirement of 8700kj (just over 2000 kCal) per day.

The move is a win for the AFGC’s preferred labelling system, which many groups have been critical of as too confusing for consumers to understand easily.

The AFGC has supported the system with a “Healthy Eating, Made Easy” a TV dvertising campaign, as well as consumer education material and magazines in stores.
