Seafood company Australis Aquaculture told just-food today (11 September) that gaining a listing with Safeway stores in the US is a significant step in its plans to expand internationally.

Safeway, the third-largest US supermarket operator, has reached and agreement that will see it stock Australis’s fresh and frozen Barramundi products at all of its 1,740 US stores.

“We are launching in all US Safeway stores,” a spokesperson for the company told just-food. “Our plans are to grow substantially in the US and abroad over the next year, expanding Australis barramundi and other products in both the retail and foodservice sectors.”

Australis managing director Josh Goldman said the deal is a milestone for the company.

“The supply creation initiatives we began last year are yielding significantly increased amounts of product that we can deliver to large national retailers like Safeway,” Goldman said in a statement.

“The ability to service new customers like Safeway is an important component to meeting our fiscal 2009 sales targets.”
