Asda, the UK retailer, has launched a range of private-label Mexican condiments in a bid to tap into what it sees as the “huge demand” for “street food” in the country.
The UK’s second-largest grocer has developed products include marinades, sauces and mayonnaise that it said would “offer shoppers a more genuine experience” as part of a “next generation of Mexican dining”.
Asda said the inspiration for the products came after a team visited Mexico City. Mark Richmond, Asda’s head innovation development chef, said: “We didn’t want to just look at street food for inspiration, we wanted to hit the streets of Mexico to bring real, authentic Mexican food to the UK. Our mission was to create a new range of sauces that use the same ingredients that we tasted in Mexico City. We found that much of the Mexican cuisine available in the UK would never actually be served in Mexico, it was a lot fresher – Mexicans would never dream of adding cheese or rice to their burritos. We know customers’ tastes are constantly evolving, so we’re really proud of these sauces and can’t wait for shoppers to try them.”
The range includes two marinades, two sauces, chilli flakes, a chilli mayo and a relish. The Yucatán and Chimichurri marinades have a recommended retail price of GBP1.50 (US$1.83). The jalapeño sauce and the guajillo and chipotle sauce have an RRP of GBP1.
Asda’s new lime and ancho chilli mayo, plus the Tomatillo relish have been given an RRP of GBP1.50. The chilli flakes have an RRP of GBP0.99.
