As of 2021, India has a population of 1.3 billion, making it the second largest country in the world by this measure. There are 51.9% males and 48.1% females.

There are 459.4 million people employed in India, with an unemployment rate of 8.4% – 28.9 million people.


India is the fifth largest economy in the world with a GDP of $3.3 trillion. India’s GDP has grown by 100% between 2010 and 2021 and is expected to grow by 37% by 2025.

As of 2021 there are 36.5 million students in tertiary education in India, with 137.2 million students in secondary and 173.3 million in primary education. India spent 3.4% of its GDP on education in 2019.

India ranked 63rd in the World Bank’s Doing Business Report (2020). In the 2019 report it finished 77th. In the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report (2019), India finished 68th, after ranking 58th in 2018.

Public healthcare expenditure totalled $25.7 billion and private healthcare expenditure equalled $76.5 billion in 2018.

The largest urban areas in India are Mumbai (20 million people), Delhi (19.5 million) and Kolkata (14.6 million).
