New regulations in Ontario will see elementary school vending machines offering more foods rich in vitamins and fibre.
Provincial school boards will restrict items in vending machines to healthy choices like milk; yoghurt-based drinks; water; granola bars; muffins; and popcorn. Carbonated drinks and chips are banned.
More than 115 elementary schools with vending machines served carbonated beverages last year, but are stocking them up now solely with juice and water. Vendors have agreed to co-operate voluntarily. The rules do not yet apply to cafeterias, but those menus will eventually be changed as well. School boards are to report to the province early next year on compliance.
